CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION N0. 89-19 <br />BY: THOMAS O'GRADY <br />A RESOLUTION URGING THE UNITED STATES HOUSE OF <br />REPRESENTATIVES TO ADOPT H.R. 467 - "BRADY HANDGUN <br />VIOLENCE PREVENTION ACT" WHICH PROHIBITS THE SALE OF <br />HAND GUNS FOR A SEVEN DAY PERIOD AND ALLOWS FOR A <br />PERMISSIVE BACKGROUND CHECK ON THE PROSPECTIVE PURCHASER. <br />WHEREAS, there is presently pending in the U.S. House of <br />Representatives H.R. 467 which is a Bill commongly known as the Brady <br />Handgun Violence Prevention Act which among other things provides for a <br />seven day period between the request far the purchase of the gun and its <br />delivery for the purpose of having a background check on the person wishing <br />to purchase said gun; and <br />WHEREAS, the passage of the act would require various states to adopt <br />regulations dealing with the transfer of firearms which regulations would <br />be required to include, among other things, the following: a sworn <br />application for a permit with the minimum information of 1} the name, <br />address, date of birth appearing on a valid identification document of the <br />transferee containing a photograph of the transferee, 2) a statement that <br />Federal law does not prohibit the receipt of the handgun by the transferee, <br />3} the date the sworn statement is made, and 4) notice that the <br />transferee intends to obtain a handgun from the transferor; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council believes that the uncontrolled sale and <br />distribution of handguns has been responsible for numerous tragic deaths <br />which could have been prevented if a Bill such as the Brady Handgun <br />Violence Prevention Act were in effect. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF <br />CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: That this Council does hereby declare its support for H.R. <br />467 commonly referred to as the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and <br />does hereby urge the Congress of the United States to adopt said Act; <br />SECTION 2: That this Council does hereby direct the Clerk of Council <br />to send certified copies of this Resolution to the Speaker of the House, <br />Congressman Edward F. Feighan, Congressman Louis Stokes, Congressman Mary <br />Rose Oakar, Congressman Donald Pease, and Congressman Dennis Eckert; <br />
