? <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION N0. 84 - 20 <br />BY: MRS. SARINGER <br />RESOLUTION OBJECTION TO THE PROPOSED 15% <br />RATE INCREASE REQUESTED BY THE <br />CLEVELAND ELECTRIC ILLUMINATING COMPANY <br />AND DECLARIVG AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, in January 1983, Cleveland Electric Illurninating <br />Company had requested a rate increase for $89 million. This <br />amount was not granted rather the Public Utilities Commission of <br />Ohio granted a$13.5 million increase. This increase was a <br />result of the Consumer's Council meeting with Cleveland Electric <br />Illuninating Co, whereby Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. <br />compronised their position and indicated that they would not seek <br />another increase until late 1984; and <br />WHEREAS, even though for the last two(2) years Cleveland <br />Electric Illuninating Co. has amassed large profits, they still <br />recently have requested a$180 million rate hike even though they <br />had previously indicated that they would not seek the same until <br />late 1984. The latest increase would add approximately $7.94 per <br />month to the average consumers bill; and <br />4dHEREAS, approximately $50 million of the proposed increase <br />is related to the construction of the Perry Nuclear Power Plant <br />in Uhio as well as a power plant in Pennsylvania; and <br />WHEREAS, in essence the consumers are being required to pay <br />for the unwise ventures, with respect to the construction of <br />nuclear power plants; and <br />6dHERiAS, the continuous request for rate increases are <br />creating an undo Yiardship and burden, not only upon senior <br />citizens but also all consumers who find that in these dzfficult <br />ecomonic times, their incomes are limited and the increases in <br />resources that are available to them are not in the same <br />proportion as the request for rate increases. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL IN THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: That the Council hereby objects to the proposed <br />15% rate increase requested by the Cleveland Electric <br />Illuminating Company. <br />SECTION 2: That the Clerk of Council is hereby directed to <br />forward a copy of this Resolution to State Senator Gary <br />Suhadolnik, State Representative James M.Petro and the Public <br />Utilities Commission. <br />SECTION 3. This matter is hzreby declared to be an emergency <br />measure immediately necessary for the preservation of the public <br />health, welfare and safety and for the further reason that the
