CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION N0. 85- 26 <br />BY: Mrs. Saringer <br />A RESOLUTION URGING GENERAL MOTORS TO LOCATE <br />ITS SATIIRN DIVISION IN OHIO, AND FURTHER <br />URGING IT GIVE CUYAHOGA COUNTY PREFERABLE <br />CONSIDERATION <br />WHEREAS, General Motors is currently considering proposals from <br />various states in order to determine where to locate its new Saturn <br />division; and <br />WHEREAS, Ohio ranks high with respect to three critical factors- <br />market, suppliers, and transportation--which are considered in any business <br />decision-making concerning the attractiveness of a prospective new site; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, nearly two-thirds of the tatal U.S. population, income and <br />manufacturing activity are within overnight road transporation of Ohio's <br />borders; and <br />WHEREAS, Ohio's transporation network--water, railroads, roads, and <br />air travel, are a major factor for Ohio's dominance in world trade; and <br />WHEREAS, Qhio's educational- strength--in both academic and vocational <br />regimens, provide businesses with a valuable resource-a highly-motivated <br />work force and the state's commitment to education excellence is enhanced <br />by continued legislative support for quality elementary, secondary, <br />vocational, technical, and higher education; and <br />WHEREAS, Ohio's favorable tax measures provide an environment <br />conductive to business growth and development and a decision to locate the <br />Saturn division in Ohio, especially in Cuyahoga County, would prove a wise <br />choice by General Motors, as well as, an economic boon to this region; and <br />WHEREAS, Saturn could bring approximately 6,000 jobs, as well as, <br />another estimated 15,000 spin-off jobs, to Ohio and Cuyahoga County, which <br />currently have respective unemployment rate of 9.2% and 8,6%, according to <br />December, '84 labor statistics; and <br />?EREAS, Cuyahoga County--with 61,562 of its 715,000 labor force <br />Currently unemployed, many of whom are skilled auto-workers--would <br />especially welcome the opportunities for employment that Saturn would bring <br />to Northeast Ohio; and <br />WHEREAS, the economic, social, medical, recreational, and cultural <br />renaissance currently underway in metropolitan Cleveland and throughout the <br />state offer prospective Saturn employees a high quality of living and <br />excellent choice of neighborhoods in which to live and raise a family. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH <br />OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: That the Mayor and the Council urge William Hoglund, <br />president of the Saturn Corporation, and General Motors corporate
