_ .? .. <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION N0. 85- 10 <br />BY: JANET SARINGER <br />A RESOLUTION OBJECTING TO THE PROPOSED RATE <br />INCREASE BEING REQUESTED BY THE OHIO BELL TELEPHONE <br />COMPANY AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, Ohio Bell Telephone Company will be requesting an approximate <br />30% rate increase for residential telephone service, plus substantial new <br />or increased charges for operator assistance calls; and <br />WHEREAS, Ohio Bell increased the basic monthly rate from $12.95 to <br />$14.95 effective February 15, 1984; and <br />WHEREAS, if the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio grants this new <br />rate increase request, the monthly charge for one-line unlimited telephone <br />service would increase from $14.95 to $19.45 a month; and <br />WHEREAS, senior citizens, who would be affected the most by an <br />additional rate increase, are living on limited incomes, and yet are the <br />most in need of residential telephone service; and <br />WHEREAS, for many senior citizens the telephone is their only contact <br />with outside activities, and many would have to forfeit this necessity due <br />to their inability to pay these increased costs; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH <br />OLMSTED, STATE OF OHIO AND COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA: <br />SECTION l: That this Council hereby objects to the approximate 30% <br />rate increase for residential telephone service being requested by Ohio <br />Bell Telephone Company. <br />SECTION 2: That the Clerk of Council is hereby directed to forward <br />copies of this Resolution to State Senator Gary Suhadolnik, Representative <br />Jeff Jacobs, and to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. <br />SECTION 3: That this Resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency <br />measure necessary for the immediate preservation of the public health, <br />safety and welfare of the City of North Olmsted, and for the further reason <br />that it is necessary to express North Olmsted's objections to the Ohio Bell <br />Telephone rate increase at the earliest time possible, and this Resolution <br />shall become immediately effective upon receiving the affiramative vote of <br />two-thirds of all members elected to Council and approval of the Mayor, <br />otherwise from and after the earliest period alloved by law. <br />PASSED: /,qis°' <br />ATTEST: <br />LORENCE E.
