. <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION 93-69 <br />BY: THE MAYOR AND ENTIRE CITY COUNCIL <br />A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING TRY TRANSIT WEEK 93. <br />WHEREAS, increased public investment in transit <br />services provides the potential to create jobs and enhance <br />business prosperity; and <br />WHEREAS, the nation, our communities and our citizens <br />face the consequences to health and the environment that are <br />brought on by automobile emissions; and <br />WHEREAS, transportation consumes more than 60 percent <br />of all petroleum used in the United States and increases the <br />nation's reliance on foreign oil; and <br />WHEREAS, public transportation is vital to the quality <br />of life and economic well being of the citizens of North <br />Olmsted and surrounding communities in Cuyahoga County; and <br />WHEREAS, workers, school children, senior citizens, <br />people with disabilities and those unable to afford an <br />automobile use public transportation to gain access to jobs, <br />schools, medical facilities and other fundamental services; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, traffic congestion can also be alleviated <br />through the increased availability and use of public <br />transportation and other forms of high occupancy, <br />shared-ride services; and <br />WHEREAS, the North Olmsted Municipal Bus Line, a <br />division of the City of North Olmsted, has been in operation <br />for more than 62 years and has transported more than <br />1,230,000 passengers in 1992; and <br />WHEREAS, the North Olmsted Municipal Bus Line and the <br />Greater Cleveland RTA, the American Public Transit <br />Association, the National Association of Regional Councils, <br />the National League of Cities, the United States Conference <br />of Mayors, and America's Coalition for Transit NOW have <br />declared May 17-21, 1993 to be TRY TRANSIT WEEK and have <br />called upon all citizens to join in a nation-wide effort to <br />promote public transit's benefits, honor transit employees <br />and encourage new riders.
