JOB TITLE: LABORATORY TECHNICIAN <br /> Nature of Work: This is technical work performing a <br /> considerable volume of standard <br /> chemical and bacteriological tests in the laboratory of the <br />A„ municipal wastewater treatment plant. <br />?. Incumbents in this class conduct routine laboratory tests, <br /> technical preparation of solutions and media as well as partic- <br /> ipate in the specialized sampling, tests, and investigations of water <br /> quality control or industrial wastewater pollution control. <br /> Tests are performed according to well designed and standardized <br />?r procedures but require accurate and skilled application of <br /> laboratory techniques as well as the competence to modify standard <br /> tests and develop new procedures when necessary. Work is <br /> performed under the general supervision of the Assistant <br /> Superintendent-Plant Operations who provides specific instructions <br /> or new or modified procedures and who inspects testing methods, <br /> results and laboratory techniques. <br />rr <br /> Examples of Work: <br />? - <br />,r Performs bacteriological examinations of water samples, prepares <br /> cultures and makes microscopic examinations; and reads and <br />?- records results. <br /> Incubates and grows bacteria for coliform plate counts; counts <br /> coliform after incubation; makes bacteriological examinations <br /> of wastewater or industrial waste samples secured from the source <br /> or from within the system during the several stages of treatment. <br /> Prepares, maintains, and sets up for specific operation a wide <br /> variety of laboratory equipment apparatus and supplies; cleans <br /> <br />?. and sterilizes laboratory equipment utensils and facilities. <br /> Documents, tabulates and prepares accurate reports on all tests <br /> performed as directed by the Superintendent of the Water <br /> <br />? Pollution Control Department or the Assistant Superintendent- <br /> Plant Operations. <br />4w <br /> Maintains supply of chemicals in laboratory; washes glassware; <br /> cleans up, calibrates, and services laboratory equipment and <br /> apparatus periodically when required. <br />?.. Performs various routine tests, such as titration, filtration, <br /> or precipitation; makes laboratory tests reports and furnishes <br /> test date. <br /> Conducts investigations and sampling programs of industrial waste <br />±ww problems and wastewater flows which are of interest to the <br /> municipal water pollution control program as outlined by the <br />?
