CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 74 - 129 <br />BY: ~P •~,~.. <br />A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE INCREASE IN <br />RATES SOUGHT BY THE OHIO BELL TELEPHONE <br />COMPANY AND IMPLORING THE PUBLIC UTILITIES <br />COMMISSION OF OHIO NOT TO GRANT SAID <br />CONTEMPLATED RATE INCREASE, AND DECLARING <br />AN EMERGENCY, AS AMENDED. <br />WHEREAS, telephone service has become a way of life with our <br />residents, and <br />WHEREAS, the Ohio Bell Telephone Company has a monoply in <br />supplying telephone service in the (:ity of North Olmsted, and <br />WHEREAS, there is an indication that the Ohio Bell Telephone <br />Company will fine a formal applicat:Lon for an undisclosed rate <br />increase sometime between September 30th and the end of this year, and <br />WHEREAS, it was anticipated the ninety-eight million dollar <br />rate increase was to bring in a 7.64 percent rate of return, and <br />WHEREAS, this Council feels that it would be unconscionable to <br />permit any increase in the rates fo:r telephone service in that the <br />Ohio Bell Telephone Company was granted a 20 percent increase in <br />rates less than eighteen months ago; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA ALJD STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION l: That the Mayor and Council oppose the unconscionable <br />rate increase or any increase in rates sought by the Ohio Bell <br />Telephone Company. <br />SECTION 2: That all other communities in Ohio that are rendered <br />telephone service by the Ohio Bell Telephone Company oppose the <br />contemplated rate increase. <br />SECTION 3: That the Mayor and Council implore the Public <br />Utilities Commission of Ohio not to grant any rate increase to the <br />Ohio Bell Telephone Company in light of the fact that Ohio Bell was <br />granted a 20 percent increase in rates less than eighteen months ago. <br />SECTION 4: That this resolution is hereby declared to be an <br />emergency measure immediately necessary for the preservation of the <br />public health, safety and welfare, and for the further reason that it <br />is immediately necessary to express; opposition against the imposition <br />of excessive rates for telephone service, and further provided it <br />receives the affirmative vote of tv~-o-thirds of all members elected <br />to Council, it shall take effect acid be in force immediately upon its <br />passage and approval by the Mayor. <br />PASSED• <br />As amended <br />ATTEST: , <br />NORA T.
