Marie Gallo
From: Lahdvm@aol.com
Sent: Saturday, September 04, 2010 9:13 PM
To: gallom@north-olmsted.com
Cc: Lahdvm@aol.com
Subject: proposed Ordinance 2010-108
Dear Members of the North Olmsted City Council,
Page 1 of 1
c~
I am writing to you as a North Olmsted taxpayer and resident and asking you to oppose the proposed
ordinance 2010-108 regarding dog breeding limitations. I would also like to state now that I would like my
comments read into the record.
I am a veterinarian locally and have many good clients who live in North Olmsted who breed dogs well and with
great care for the health and long term homes for the puppies. I myself am a breeder of French Bulldogs for 10
years now. I breed for betterment of the breed, health and temperament. I am an active member of many dog
clubs, including my national breed club where I chair the Breeder Education committee, as well as I show my
dogs on weekends and educate potential pet owners. Sadly, most people do not realize that breeders are NOT
the problem for rescue, instead it is impulsive buyers and bad pet owners who do not spay and neuter their dog
and let them be bred accidentally. My puppies are never without homes, often they are spoken for before they
are even born, as are most breeders. They are placed in lifelong homes (usually by 2-3 months of
age) because breeders, like me, screen potential adopters carefully and consequently our dogs do not end up
in rescue. In fact, if ever a problem arises, dogs are more often then not taken back by their breeder and a new
home is found. Breeders are not the problem here. One dog on a tie out can be much more of a nuisance than
a breeder's pack. Most breeders I know are painfully careful that their dogs do not disturb anyone, and far
exceed anyone's standards of care, nutrition, veterinary care and training.
I believe this new ordinance is a huge infringement on my rights. I have lived in North Olmsted more than 20
years now, first as a youth and now as a home owner. I chose to settle here permanently but will have to
reconsider that if this bill passes. I see no reason to make this into law, as there are currently provisions on the
books for fining pet owners whose dogs are not clean, are noisy or running loose. I think this city has many
more important things we can spend taxpayers' money on rather than counting how many intact dogs a person
has on their own property.
Respectfully,
Lori Hunt, DVM
9/7/2010
