October 12, 1994
TO: Councilwoman Janet Saringer, BZD Chairperson
SUBJECT: Proposed Sea of Learning Child Care Center
26945 Brookpark Road Extension
The material submitted by the proposed child care enter indicated that the following
would be done to protect the children crossing to/from and while in the playground area.
1. The outdoor playground will be entirely enclosed by a fence with a
lockable gate;
2. The children would exit the rear doors to a painted crosswalk;
3. Caution signs would be posted at both ends of the building and safety
cones would be posted along with the crosswalk to block the roadway;
4. An adult supervisor will be present at the crossing with a stop sign.
When comparing this location to the Child's View Day Care Center at 24064 Lorain
Road, two notable differences are apparent. The first is that the walking distance is much
shorter, the second is that the casual driver will have ready access to this alley. Since the
sight distance along the rear of the building is excellent, the latter should not be a
problem. If the casual driver does become a problem a speed bump located near each end
of the building could help.
A phone conversation was held with Nan Archbold, Day Care License Specialist for the
State of Ohio. Nan stated she has not been able to make a site inspection to date but has
no problem with what is proposed since it exceeds all safety requirements.
Larry J. 'ffith, P.E.
Assistant City Engineer
LJG/ss
cc: Paul W. Deichmann, P.E., City Engineer
Ralph H. Bohlmann, Service Director
Carolyn Kasler, Safety Director
i
