interest in the property being c~veloped nor can we think of a
situation where there has been a problem with this.
While it is not in my power to prohibit you from requesting
legislation, !wanted it clear thmt 1 rn~uld not request any on this
subject and would urge you to come to the same conclusion.
24 Hour City Hall
Nancy Wlodarski and Sara V1~ite have been investigating putting
City Hall on the Internet. This would atbw anyone with access to
a computer and modem to contact Crty Hall at any time of the day
or night, 365 days per year.
As you probably already know, we have experimented with
telephone lines and answering machines in the past but they have
not worked well since it only takes a minimum of calls to fiN the
tape recorder. Also, this method only allows people to leave
messages, not get action.
Through the Internet people would not only be able to leave
messages with Elected officials, Directors and Divisions, they
could receive information, get copies of documents, and complete
forms. Imagine, a homeowner could actually complete a building
permit on a home computer at two O'clock in the morning. The
Building Department could review it, make comments and send
the bill during normal City Hall hours. Nobody would have to take
off work or miss business opportunities because of our schedule.
The initial cost will be in the area of $11,000. This includes the
monthly operating fee.
Nancy and Sara are also exploring the opportunity to offer the
Internet access to focal businesses at a fee that would be
competitive and offset our costs. Local businesses could then
advertise and do business throughout the country through their
own computers. This would save money, increase profits and 2%
of that benefit will go into our Income Tax collections.
