Council Minutes of 6/6/2000 <br />the Common Pleas Court. There has been no activity in Common Pleas court relative to <br />this matter. He suggests that the legislation be passed this evening under suspension of <br />the rules which will moot any lawsuit that currently exists. <br />2) He is currently in the process of writing the appeal brief in the Parcel E case. <br />3) The Law Department is preparing for trial regarding the retaliation case in the <br />Chamber of Commerce issue. Hilary Taylor has submitted a brief to the federal court <br />objecting to the attorney's fees issue. <br />Finance Director Copfer: 1) Today the County Commissioners passed the necessary <br />legislation allowing North Olmsted residents to participate in the home improvement loan <br />program, which is referred to as HELP or the County Linked Deposit Program. <br />Residents who are interested in this program should contact the Finance Department for <br />more information. <br />Mr. Miller, chairperson of the Transportation Committee: 1) 'The committee met on <br />June 1. Present were committee members Miller, Gareau and McKay; Council members <br />Nashar, Kasler, and Limpert; Safety Director Jenkins. Based on recommendations of <br />Traffic Engineer Griffith, the ordinance was amended to read in the last line, "...only <br />during the hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. as amended." The committee recommended <br />approval. <br />Mrs. Kasler, chairperson of the Intra-Governmental Relations and Legislation; Long- <br />Range Planning Committee: 1) The committee met this evening, June 6. Present were <br />committee members Kasler, Miller, Nashar and Mayor Musial. The meeting was held to <br />interview Marty Conway, a resident of North Olmsted since 1970, who was <br />recommended for appointment to the Board of Building Code Appeals. Mr. Conway is <br />presently the business manager of the asbestos workers and began his career as an <br />asbestos worker, spending his entire career in the construction trades. The committee <br />was impressed with his experience, his enthusiasm and his humility and his willingness to <br />volunteer his services to this board. The committee unanimously approved Mr. Conway <br />to be appointed to that board and wish him luck. Mrs. Kasler moved to approve the <br />appointment of Michael Conway to the Board of Building Code Appeals to complete the <br />full term of 1/1/98 to 12/31/02. The motion was seconded by Mr. Miller and <br />unanimously approved. <br />Mr. O'Grady, chairperson of the Public Safety, Health & Welfare Committee and the <br />Environmental Control Committee: 1) The Public Safety, Health & Welfare committee <br />met on May 31. Present were committee members O'Grady, Nashar and Limpert; <br />Council members Saringer, Gareau, McKay and Miller; Mayor Musial, Safety Director <br />Jenkins, Finance Director Copfer, Service Director Bohlmann and Police Officer Holly; <br />resident Paul Barker. The issue for discussion was Mr. O'Grady's proposal to create a <br />program within the City of North Olmsted to offer gun locks to protect our residents who <br />have firearms in their homes. Officer Chuck Holly opened by voicing the support of the <br />Chief of Police and the North Olmsted Police Department for this program. He stated <br />there were two things that he would like to recommend. First, that a universal type lock <br />be used so that less time and expense are incurred in procuring the gun locks.
