Council Minutes of 6/5/2001
other people on Sweetbrier ~ complain too because they have a right to be able to
get in and out of their driveways as well as watching for the children to go by. There
are younger children at that end of the street, and those residents will be concerned
for the safety of their children who have to use their driveways to get to the sidewalk.
Mrs. Fox took it as for sure they were going to do that, and that is not what was said.
Greg Follen, 27807 Blossom
• He is one of the parents who drops his daughter off along Sweetbrier. He finds
"chilling" the statements/references to "our street." He lives in North Olmsted, a
community that he thinks wants to protect all fts children, not just those who live in
the Sandy Ridge development. Pine School draws a number of students from all
over. Regarding the three policemen who were sent there, none of them got the
ordinance right. There were more apologies extended than were tickets. He believes
some threat is in force. But the parents are genuine, they behave. Their side of things
has not been voiced as much as others have. He enjoys driving his daughter to
school. There is some safety factor and reassurance in his being able to do that. And,
therefore, he respectfully asks Council not to endorse the ordinance.
Michael Ubaldi, 26614 Fairfax Lane
• Requested the dates for the construction of the Sandy Ridge subdivision, specifically
Sweetbrier; the construction date of Pine School; the date when the layout of the
crosswalk was done and the present signage on Sweetbrier. President Saringer
answered that Council would not have those dates but suggested he could get them
from Safety Director Jenkins or from the Building Department.
Mr. O'Grady commented that Mrs. Deis had spoken about the problem with traffic at
school times. This ordinance does absolutely nothing to change the traffic at school
times. Mrs. Weir mentioned the problem with parents doing turn-grounds in driveways,
and this ordinance has absolutely nothing to do with turn-grounds in driveways. What
this ordinance does is allow a car to be parked immediately adjacent to a crosswalk for
most hours of the day, all the day on the weekends and all summer. That's an unsafe
condition. It prevents the child from seeing a car coming; it prevents the driver of the car
from seeing the child approaching the crosswalk. That's what the question is, and that's
why this shouldn't go forward.
LEGISLATION
Ordinance No. 2001-62 introduced by Mayor Musial was given its third reading. An
ordinance authorizing and directing the Mayor to enter into an agreement with Browning-
Ferris Industries of Ohio, Inc. for a two year extension to the contract for the collection
and disposal of solid waste and processing of recyclable materials, and declaring an
emergency. Mr. McKay moved for adoption; second by Mr. Limpert; motion passed
unanimously. Ordinance No. 2001-62 adopted.
8
