Council Minutes of 9/16/2008
~3
recommended changes in the study with the idea that they would begin to
start budgeting for the changes so that the city public buildings could
become more ADA compliant. The theory is to chip away at the ADA
recommendations in the study. It wouldn't be possible to do all of them at
once, but just to begin to knock a couple of them off dealing with the priority
specified in the study. She also indicated that the Community Block Grant
Fund group would look for obtaining funding for the Senior Center, the
Community Cabin, and possibly the Recreation Center as well. Service
Director Limpert spoke about ADA issues that were being addressed at City
Hall and the Senior Center. He indicated that Springvale and the Recreation
Center have the staff themselves, and that they need to make the changes
pursuant to the study.
• The committee heard from two residents who indicated that they had a
difficult and challenging experience at Springvale when they attended a high
school reunion. One resident uses a wheelchair and had issues and
difficulties in getting into the facility and then addressing the buffet table.
Mr. Young indicated he would address those concerns in the future. Lastly,
Mr. Gareau pointed out an issue as to signage at Springvale. The conclusion
or consensus there is that we would ask the Community Life Services
Director and administration to consider looking at the signage indicating
where handicapped parking is and where the elevator is for the second floor
so that the individuals in wheelchairs could properly avail themselves of all
the services at Springvale.
AUDIENCE PARTICIP,~.T,~ IUN
1) Dennis Lambert, 25057 Carey Lane, is not enthusiastic about more car lots in
North Olmsted. He would rather see an office building where employees would be
paying income taxes. He noted that other communities are attracting high profile
businesses such as Brush Technologies which just moved to Mayfield. Our
community has money problems and it is not being approached with vision. He
sees a clear lack of vision and noted other communities are doing well because of
planning. He feels there should have been restrictions put on how many car lots can
go within so many square miles of business district. We need some good
development in here-development that pays taxes. Those car lots are just
warehouses. He doesn't see a whole lot of money coming to this community for the
use of that land.
Councilman Gareau disagreed with Mr. Lambert's comments. He noted that last
year, through the work of our economic development consultant, the city landed
Advanstar who came into the city with a $10 million payroll. Why didn't Mr.
Lambert acknowledge the administration when they went out and did exactly what
he wanted them to do? All the cities in the county are working to attract businesses
like Brush. Duke Realty has been trying to sell their entire operation. They had no
takers, so they broke it up and are marketing their most profitable office park which
is in North Olmsted. The most profitable, the most highly occupied, most attractive
piece of real estate that one might want is right here in North Olmsted.
15
~e.~
,~
