City of North Olmsted
5200 Dover Center Road • North Olmsted, Ohio 44070-3129
Phone: (440) 777-8000 • Fax: (440) 777-5889
Norman T. Musial, Mayor
June 13, 2001
Memo To: All of Council
From: Mayor Musial
Subject: Ordinance No. 2001-55
Ordinance No. 2001-55 purports to irnprove safety of children crossing Sweetbriar Drive
in the vicinity of the Fine Sehool'crosswalk by modifying Ordinance 2000-146 wherein:
a. The length of the no parking, stopping or standing zone is extended, and
b. Such restriction is limited to the hours when children are typically going to
or leaving schooL
In my opinion"Ordinance No, 2401-55 in fact reduces the> safety of chil€lren, crossing in
the vicinity of the Pine School crosswalk during non-school houxs. During the time
periods when children are not going ta or leaving Pine School, whether it be on weekends
or when school is not in session, this Ordinance eliminates the car `free'zone on the
southern part of Sweetbriar Drive'entirely.
For example, chilciren leaving the Pine School play ground area on a weekend and riding
a bike to Sweetbriar Drive ma.y cross Sweetbriar Drive using the crosswalk. ` If cars were
allowed to park immediately adjacent to the crosswalk, in my opinion, a safety problem
would be created.
Further, it is my opinion that a 24-7-365 car free zone would provide the maximum
degree of safety in the area where Pine School property abuts Sweetbriar Drive.
Although it has been mentioned that a 24 7-365 car free zone is overkill, it is acceptable
to me.
With all of this said, I hereby place my VETO on Ordinance No. 2001-55.
If my VETO is sustained, I intend to introduce an Ordinance relocating the 26893
Sweetbriar Drive sign to an area immediately West of the driveway at 26869 Sweetbriar
Drive. Further, I intend to have the necessary action undertaken to relocate, if possible,
? "Together We Can Make A Difference!" ,
