Awr-4
Process evaluation and design of a 2nd phase 98 MGD fadiity (180 MGD total) for 10 mg/L
BODE, 10 mg/L TSS, 10 mg/l. TN, 2 rngiL NFi, N and 0.2 mg/L TP. Process selected is the
Columbus semi-ae~+obic cxmoept, wF~i is r~on-~oprietsry AWT 81o-P proc:eas firsst employed
at the Columbus plants (See Ccnbus). To be compbNd by 1995. in 1993 received contract
to design a 3rd-Phase BPMdeN system for 75 Mt3D.
inchpendent evaluation of new Bio P and NDN process and patenting assistanc~.~ Technical
assistance in the defense of AM Product 8 Chemic~s, Inc. lawsuit t OWASA on patent
inirin~ment. OWASA prods patent has been snowed by lJS PTO. The suit was settled
in favor of OWASA.
Evaluation of the original AWT process design and test work. Recommendations for new
study were implemented and a two stage sequendng batch reactor design evolved.
Conducted chemical studies whid~ resulted in a dear primary effluent free of toxic tannings
w~ produced. The infiuerrt wa of <1400 mglL BODE, >2000 I'rtg/L TSS and 250 mg/l
TKN has been treated to <6 mgfL GODS, <12 mg/L TSS and <1 mg/L NH~N in the 2.5 years
since startup.
The S30 mm proposed AWT for Caton, MA was reviewed and an akemetive process concept
developed which would reduce the plant cost by 60-7096 and result in a facili#y easier to
operate. Cost reduction verified by another engineering firm in MA.
Comprehensive long-term study f~ interim process improvements for 23rd Ave (37 MGD) to
produce AWT elfittertt gttanty inducing denitrirification. Process changes at plant has reduced
the 500-900 mUg SVI to 60-50 mUg, enminated Nocardia aril is now produang 4-6 mg/L
BODE, 5-10 mg/L TSS, < 0.5 mg/L NI-~N and < 7 mg/L TN in a baTfled sings stage roactor.
Clarifier operation and configuration (energy dispersion in~t, large feedweN and 12-30" deep
spiral scrapers) was mooed to increase sonde Ic~tding cry by 250 - 30096. Nocardia was
selectively eliminated by a chkxine spray box which only dosed the foam.
