Any abuse of sick leave or the unjustified pattemed use of sick leave shall be just and sufficient cause for discipline, including discharge, as may be determined by the Employer, subject to the grievance and arbitration procedure. 14.7 All employees shall receive two (2) eight (8) hour days off, plus an additional four (4) hours with pay, or the Employee may elect to receive twenty (20) hours pay for each six (6) consecutive months of unused sick leave. Unused sick leave days earned may be carried over, if not taken within one (1) year of date of day earned, to the following year, with a maximum of five (5) days. 14.8. Accumulated unused sick leave time may be converted at the time of retirement or death for all full-time Corrections Officers of the Police Depariment. The payment for all those who qualify under this Section shall be based upon the ra.te of pay of the employee at the time of his retarement or death, and payment sha11 amount to one- ha1i(1/2) of the unused accumulated sick leave time, but in all instances, the maximum amount paid shall not exceed an amount in excess of eighty (80) days in 1998, one hundred (100) days in 1999 and one hundred and twenty (120) accumulated unused sick days in 2000 and thereafter. 14.9. Employees may use up to fifteen (15) work days per yeaz of earned and accumulated sick leave if necessitated by illness in the employee's immediate family.
