, ? . <br />JOB TITLE: <br />LABORATORY TECHNICIAN <br />Nature of Work: This is technical work performing a considerable <br />volume of standard chemical and bacteriological tests in the <br />laboratory of the municipal wastewater treatment plant. <br />Incumbents in this class conduct routine laboratory tests, tech- <br />nical preparation of solutions and media as well as participate <br />in the specialized sampling, tests, and investigations of water <br />quality control or industrial wastewater pollution control. <br />Tests are performed according to well designed and standardized <br />procedures but require accurate and skilled application of <br />laboratory techniques as well as the competence to modify <br />standard tests and develop new procedures when necessary. Work <br />is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant <br />Superintendent-Plant Operations who provides specific <br />instructions or new or modified procedures and'who inspects <br />testing methods, results and laboratory techniques. <br />Examples of Work: <br />Performs bacteriological examinations of water samples, prepares <br />cultures and makes microscopic examinations; and reads and <br />records results. <br />Incubates and grows bacteria for coliform plate counts; counts <br />coliform after incubation; makes bacteriological examinations of <br />wastewater or industrial waste samples secured from the source or <br />from within the system during the several stages of treatment. <br />Prepares, maintains, and sets up for specific operation a wide <br />variety of laboratory equipment apparatus and supplies; cleans <br />and sterilizes laboratory equipment utensils and facilities. <br />Documents, tabulates and prepares.accurate reports on all tests <br />performed as directed by the Superintendent of the Water <br />Pollution Control Department or the Assistant Superintendent- <br />Plant Operations. <br />Maintains supply of chemicals in laboratory; washes glassware; <br />cleans up, calibrates, and services laboratory equipment and <br />apparatus periodically when required. <br />Perfornas various routine tests, such as titration, fiZtration, or <br />precipitation; makes laboratory tests reports and furnishes test <br />date. <br />EXHIBIT B-11 <br />73
