. <br />3rv?, <br />CITY OF NOxTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION N0. 92-129 <br />BY: MAYOR ED BOYLE <br />A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CUYAHOGA COUNTY PLANNING <br />COMMISSION IN ITS APPLICATION TO THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF <br />NATURAL RESOURCES FOR A GRANT TO ESTABLISH A <br />COUNTY-WIDE PHONE BOOK RECYCLING PROGRAM. <br />WHEREAS, The community of North Olmsted is dedicated to <br />preserving this planet for future generations; and <br />WHEREAS, North Olmsted is supportive of projects <br />designed to reduce the amount of waste disposed in our <br />landfills; and <br />WHEREAS, There is currently no collection system in <br />place to recycle old telephone directories discarded to make <br />way for the approximately 2.5 million new telephone <br />directories issued each spring; and <br />WHEREAS, In 1989, Ameritech created the <br />"DirectoRecycle" program to assist communities in the <br />implementation of phone book recycling programs, turning old <br />directories into paper products, hydroseeding mulch, <br />cellulose insulation and animal bedding; and <br />WHEREAS, The Cuyahoga County Planning Commission, as <br />the planning entity for the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste <br />Management District, has applied for a grant from the Ohio <br />Department of Natural Resources to fund a county-wide <br />telephone book recycling program for the spring of 1993; and <br />WHEREAS, The grant requires a 50 percent local match <br />which will be provided by the solid waste district; and <br />WHEREAS, This project will serve as a model for a <br />recycling system which will create jobs, increase public <br />awareness of recycling, provide a use for a waste product <br />that would otherwise end up in a landfill, and create a <br />product which can be sold to support the program; and <br />WHEREAS, The project would involve the Cuyahoga County <br />Planning Commission, the Cleveland Metroparks and the <br />County's Work Project Administration Program and local <br />non-profit recyclers.
