.
3rv?,
CITY OF NOxTH OLMSTED
RESOLUTION N0. 92-129
BY: MAYOR ED BOYLE
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CUYAHOGA COUNTY PLANNING
COMMISSION IN ITS APPLICATION TO THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL RESOURCES FOR A GRANT TO ESTABLISH A
COUNTY-WIDE PHONE BOOK RECYCLING PROGRAM.
WHEREAS, The community of North Olmsted is dedicated to
preserving this planet for future generations; and
WHEREAS, North Olmsted is supportive of projects
designed to reduce the amount of waste disposed in our
landfills; and
WHEREAS, There is currently no collection system in
place to recycle old telephone directories discarded to make
way for the approximately 2.5 million new telephone
directories issued each spring; and
WHEREAS, In 1989, Ameritech created the
"DirectoRecycle" program to assist communities in the
implementation of phone book recycling programs, turning old
directories into paper products, hydroseeding mulch,
cellulose insulation and animal bedding; and
WHEREAS, The Cuyahoga County Planning Commission, as
the planning entity for the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste
Management District, has applied for a grant from the Ohio
Department of Natural Resources to fund a county-wide
telephone book recycling program for the spring of 1993; and
WHEREAS, The grant requires a 50 percent local match
which will be provided by the solid waste district; and
WHEREAS, This project will serve as a model for a
recycling system which will create jobs, increase public
awareness of recycling, provide a use for a waste product
that would otherwise end up in a landfill, and create a
product which can be sold to support the program; and
WHEREAS, The project would involve the Cuyahoga County
Planning Commission, the Cleveland Metroparks and the
County's Work Project Administration Program and local
non-profit recyclers.
