CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2014 — 63 <br />BY: Mayor Kennedy <br />A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER AS <br />CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENSS MONTH IN THE CITY <br />OF NORTH OLMSTED AND TO ENCO URA GE <br />RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES TO "GO GOLD FOR <br />CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH ", AND DECLARING <br />AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS: The Make Some Noise: Cure Kids Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) <br />charity started by an 11 -year old child with cancer in hopes of helping <br />to speed up cure research, as we lose thousands of kids to cancer each <br />year. The Foundation raises and provides funding for pediatric cancer <br />research and conducts various awareness and fundraising events <br />through a campaign known as "Go Gold for Pediatric Cancer ", and <br />WHEREAS: Families, caregivers, charities and research groups across the United <br />States are observing September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month <br />to memorialize the young lives that were taken too soon and honor the <br />survivors who face chronic health challenges; and <br />WHEREAS: Nationally each year, thousands of children face the battle against <br />cancer with inspiring hope and incredible bravery. According to the <br />American Cancer Society, approximately 10,450 children under the age <br />of fifteen will be diagnosed with cancer in 2014, and <br />WHEREAS: Some pediatric cancers have treatment protocols that are 20 -30 years old. <br />Children are typically treated in- patient for their cancers, and consequently <br />miss significant educational and social experiences over the course of <br />several months, and even years. Less than 3% of all cancer research <br />funding goes to pediatric cancer; and <br />WHEREAS: Children's cancers do not discriminate, and affects all ethnic, religious, <br />and socio- economic groups. The City recognizes the devastating effects <br />of childhood cancer and we pay tribute to the healthcare professionals, <br />researchers, and parent advocacy groups who collaborate to provide hope <br />and help to patients and families affected by pediatric cancer while <br />making vital contributions to the ongoing search for a cure for childhood <br />cancers; and <br />
