manufacturers. <br /> E. Do not paint sealant, unless recommended by sealant and paint manufacturer. <br /> 3.02 PREPARATION <br /> A. Protect finished surfaces adjoining by using masking tape or other suitable materials. <br /> B. Clean and prime joints before starting any caulking or sealing work. <br /> C. Thoroughly clean joints and spaces of mortar and other foreign materials. Cleaning agent <br /> shall be Xylol or similar non-contaminating solvent to remove any film from metal surfaces. <br /> Masonry or concrete surfaces shall be brushed or air jet cleaned. <br /> D. Joint Requirements <br /> 1. All joints and spaces to be sealed in exterior work shall be less than 1/2 inch deep <br /> and not less than 1/4 inch wide. If joints in masonry are less than that specified <br /> herein, the mortar shall be cut out to the required width and depth. All joints and <br /> spaces to receive sealant shall be completely prepared and thoroughly dry before <br /> installation of sealant. <br /> 2. Unless otherwise specified, joints and spaces which are open to a depth of 1/2 inch <br /> or greater shall be solidly filled with back-up material to within 1/4 inch of the surface. <br /> Back-up material shall be packed tightly and made continuous throughout the length <br /> of the joints. Bond breaker shall be applied as required. If joints are less than <br /> 1/4 inch deep, the back-up materialmay be omitted, a bond breaker substituted and <br /> the joint completely filled with sealant. The back-upmaterial shall not project beyond <br /> the 1/4 inch depth of the open space in any joint. Exercise care before, during, and after installation so as not to damage any material by <br /> tearing or puncturing. All finished work shall be approved before covering with any other <br /> material or construction. <br /> B. Apply sealant by an approved type of gun except where the use of a gun is not practicable, <br /> suitable hand tools shall be used. Avoid applying the compound to any surface outside of <br /> the joints or spaces to be sealed. Mask areas where required to prevent overlapping of <br /> sealant. <br /> C. All joints shall be waterproof and weathertight. <br /> D. Point sealed joints to make a slightly concave joint, the edges of which are flush with the <br /> surrounding surfaces. Exposed joints in the interior side of the door and other frames shall <br /> be neatly pointed flush or to match adjacent jointing work. <br /> E. Adjacentmaterials which have been soiled shall be cleaned immediately and the work left in <br /> neat and clean condition. <br /> F. Comply with sealant manufacturer's written instructions except where more stringent <br /> requirements are shown or specified and except where manufacturer's technical <br /> representative directs otherwise. <br /> 3.04 ADJUSTMENT AND CLEANING <br /> A. Remove misplaced sealant compounds promptly using methods and materials <br /> recommended by the manufacturer, as the work progresses. <br /> B. Allow sealants to cure and remove protective edging, of doors, louvers, saddles windows <br />
