CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2016 — 30 <br />BY: Council Member Hemann <br />A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MARCH 21, 2016, "WORLD <br />DOWN SYNDROME DAY" IN THE CITY OF NORTH OLMS TED, <br />OHIO, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, March 21, 2016 marks the 11 h anniversary of World Down <br />Syndrome Day ("WDSD") and each year the voice of individuals with Down Syndrome, <br />and those who live and work with them, grows louder; and <br />WHEREAS, the theme of this year's WDSD is "My Friends, My Community"; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, March 21 St (the 21 st day of the 3rd month), was initially selected as <br />WDSD to signify the uniqueness of the cause of Down Syndrome, the triplication <br />(trisomy) of the 21" chromosome; and <br />WHEREAS, Down Syndrome is a genetic condition resulting from the presence <br />of all or a partial extra copy of chromosome 21, meaning that individuals with Down <br />Syndrome have 47 instead of 46 chromosomes which presents in one of three forms. <br />Regardless of the form, the additional genetic material alters development and causes <br />certain physical characteristics associated with Down Syndrome; and <br />WHEREAS, individuals with Down Syndrome have become increasingly <br />integrated into society and community organizations, such as schools, health care <br />systems, work forces, and social and recreational activities. When persons with Down <br />Syndrome are provided the opportunity for full inclusion, all persons, especially children, <br />benefit by experiencing friendship, acceptance and respect; and <br />WHEREAS, with recent advancements in clinical treatment, as many as 80% of <br />adults with Down Syndrome now reach age 60, and many live even longer. As a result of <br />expanded social interaction and full inclusion, individuals with Down syndrome, have <br />increased the need for widespread public education and acceptance; and <br />WHEREAS, In support of this Resolution, the North Olmsted City School <br />District proudly reports that they support the Resolution and that students with Down <br />Syndrome as well as other disabilities are provided full inclusion in the classroom, social <br />settings and all activities as evidenced in the attached Exhibit "A"; and <br />WHEREAS, On World Down Syndrome Day, Monday, March 21, 2016, all <br />North Olmsted residents should join this Administration and City Council in saying "My <br />Friends, My Community" to get the world talking about the benefits for everyone of <br />inclusive environments for all persons, including persons with Down Syndrome. <br />
