CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2016 — 83 <br />BY: Mayor Kennedy <br />A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER AS <br />PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN THE CITY <br />OF NORTH OLMSTED, OHIO, AND DECLARING AN <br />EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, this Council wishes to support the work of the American Cancer Society <br />and others to educate our community about risk and prevention of prostate cancer; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council wishes to actively, creatively and affirmatively promote <br />Prostate Cancer Awareness by adoption of September as Awareness month; and <br />WHEREAS, In Ohio, it is estimated that 6,780 men will be diagnosed and 1,870 will die <br />from the disease in 2016; and <br />WHEREAS, There are three million prostate cancer patients and survivors fighting their <br />personal battles every day; and <br />WHEREAS, 1 in 7 men will get prostate cancer sometime in his lifetime; and <br />WHEREAS, Veterans are 1.5 times more likely to get prostate cancer; and <br />WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer and the <br />second leading cause of cancer related deaths among men; and <br />WHEREAS, This year approximately 180,890 men will be diagnosed with prostate <br />cancer in the United States alone every year — that's one man every 2.9 minutes and roughly <br />26,120 die this year from the disease — which is one man every 20 minutes; and <br />WHEREAS, African American men are at the highest risk for the disease with a rate of 1 <br />in 4 men. African American men are 2.5 times more likely to die from the disease; and <br />WHEREAS, Education regarding prostate cancer and early detection strategies is critical <br />to saving lives and preserving and protecting our families; and <br />WHEREAS, All men are at risk for prostate cancer and we encourage the citizens of <br />North Olmsted to support the importance of prostate screenings. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, CUYAHOGA COUNTY, AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: This Council hereby designates September, 2016, as Prostate Cancer <br />Awareness Month in the City of North Olmsted, and commits to assist in the effort to educate <br />and increase public awareness of this risk to public health, safety and general welfare. <br />SECTION 2: This Council hereby joins with the American Cancer Society and others <br />dedicated to the promotion of prostate cancer awareness, prevention and screening and hereby <br />
