CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2017 - 77 <br />BY: Councilmember Hemann <br />A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING NOVEMBER AS <br />PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN THE <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED, OHIO, AND DECLARING AN <br />EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, this Council wishes to support the work of the Pancreatic Cancer Action <br />Network and others to educate our community about risk and prevention of pancreatic cancer; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, this Council wishes to actively, creatively and affirmatively promote <br />Pancreatic Cancer Awareness by adoption of November as Awareness month; and <br />WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer in the United States of America is the third leading cause <br />of cancer death and is projected to be the second leading cause of death by 2020, and in 2016, an <br />estimated 53,000 Americans are believed to have been diagnosed with the disease, accounting <br />for 3% of all cancers in the country; and <br />WHEREAS, when symptoms of pancreatic cancer present themselves, it is sometimes <br />too late for an optimistic prognosis, and as one of the deadliest cancers, pancreatic cancer <br />survival within the first year after diagnosis is twenty (20) percent and the five (5) year rate is <br />just six (6) percent, with an expected 42,000 deaths in this year alone; <br />WHEREAS, pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose and there have been no significant <br />improvements in early detection, treatments methods, or survival rates in almost 40 years; and <br />WHEREAS, the 2013 Recalcitrant Cancer Research Act was signed into federal law, <br />calling upon the National Cancer institute to develop a scientific plan for pancreatic cancer and <br />other hard to treat and deadly cancers, whereby providing the direction and guidance needed to <br />make progress against these diseases; and <br />WHEREAS, education regarding pancreatic cancer and early detection strategies is <br />critical to saving lives and preserving and protecting our families; and <br />WHEREAS, annually, the month of November is designated as Pancreatic Cancer <br />Awareness Month with November 16`" being Word Pancreatic Cancer Day; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council affirms that pancreatic cancer awareness is critical to the well- <br />being and good health of all persons, including the residents of North Olmsted, Ohio. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, CUYAHOGA COUNTY, AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: This Council hereby designates November, 2017, as Pancreatic Cancer <br />Awareness Month in the City of North Olmsted, and commits to assist in the effort to educate <br />and increase public awareness of this risk to public health, safety and general welfare. <br />
