CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2018 - 37 <br />By: Council President Jones, Councilmembers Kearney, Brossard, Hemann and Schumann <br />A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE NORTH OLMSTED SCHOOL <br />DISTRICT'S EFFORTS TO ENCOURAGE AN INCREASE IN SCHOOL <br />SAFETYAND A REDUCTION OF VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS <br />WHEREAS, incidents of violence in schools have become more frequent in America; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the children and school employees of our nation deserve to attend school <br />without fear of injury or death, and their families also deserve to send them to school without <br />that fear; and <br />WHEREAS, it is the shared responsibility of all citizens to address this issue, and the <br />responsibility for preventing such violent incidents cannot be relegated to schools alone; and <br />WHEREAS, Council members, administrators, employees and community members <br />should work together with lawmakers, legal experts, law enforcement and security consultants <br />to determine how best to ensure student safety. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OFNOR TH OLMS TED, CUYAHOGA COUNTY, AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1. That the Council of the City of North Olmsted emphatically requests <br />that the President of the United States, the United States Congress, the Governor of the State of <br />Ohio and the Ohio General Assembly prioritize the protection of students and school <br />employees by enacting legislation and providing funding for: <br />1. Enhanced mental health services, such that all individuals, including children of all ages, <br />have sufficient and ready access to them. <br />2. Increased school safety mechanisms, including, but not limited to, School Resource <br />Officers (SROs), infrastructure improvements, and other security measures designed to <br />protect students and staff from violence on school grounds. <br />3. Initial or additional training for school employees, including School Resource Officers, <br />and enhanced coordination with law enforcement agencies and first responders to ensure <br />appropriate and timely responses to incidents of violence in schools or other possible life- <br />threatening situations. <br />SECTION 2.
