CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2019 - 57 <br />BY: Councilperson Williamson <br />A RESOLUTION BY THE CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RECOGNIZING APRII. AS SEXUAL, ASSAULT AWARENESS <br />MONTH, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SRAM) calls attention to the fact that sexual <br />violence is widespread and impacts every person in this community; and <br />WHEREAS, the goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate <br />communities on how to prevent it. Rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment harm our <br />community, and statistics show one in five women and one in 67 men will be raped at some <br />point in their lives; and <br />WHEREAS, child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that one in <br />six boys and one in four girls will experience sexual assault before age 18; and <br />WHEREAS, on campus, one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted during <br />their time in college, and <br />WHEREAS, more than half (54%) of American women have experienced unwanted and <br />inappropriate sexual advances frorn men. One out of every six American women has been a <br />victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime: and <br />WHEREAS, on average, there are 321,500 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault <br />each year in the United States. Every 98 seconds someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH <br />OLRISTED, COUNTY OF CUY_4HOGA, AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: that this Council hereby joins communities across the country in bringing <br />awareness to this issue and declares April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month; and <br />SECTION 2: That this Resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency measure <br />immediately necessary for the preservation of the public health, safety, and welfare, and for the <br />further reason it is necessary that this legislation go into effect immediately in order that the City <br />may immediately announce, publicize and proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, <br />and further, provided it receives the affirmative vote of two-thirds of all members of the Council, <br />it shall take effect and be in force immediately upon its passage and approval by the Mayor. <br />
