CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED RESOLUTION NO. 2019 - 57 BY: Councilperson Williamson A RESOLUTION BY THE CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED RECOGNIZING APRII. AS SEXUAL, ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SRAM) calls attention to the fact that sexual violence is widespread and impacts every person in this community; and WHEREAS, the goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it. Rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment harm our community, and statistics show one in five women and one in 67 men will be raped at some point in their lives; and WHEREAS, child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that one in six boys and one in four girls will experience sexual assault before age 18; and WHEREAS, on campus, one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted during their time in college, and WHEREAS, more than half (54%) of American women have experienced unwanted and inappropriate sexual advances frorn men. One out of every six American women has been a victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime: and WHEREAS, on average, there are 321,500 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year in the United States. Every 98 seconds someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH OLRISTED, COUNTY OF CUY_4HOGA, AND STATE OF OHIO: SECTION 1: that this Council hereby joins communities across the country in bringing awareness to this issue and declares April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month; and SECTION 2: That this Resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency measure immediately necessary for the preservation of the public health, safety, and welfare, and for the further reason it is necessary that this legislation go into effect immediately in order that the City may immediately announce, publicize and proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and further, provided it receives the affirmative vote of two-thirds of all members of the Council, it shall take effect and be in force immediately upon its passage and approval by the Mayor.
