CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2023 - 65 <br />BY: Council President Brossard and All of Council <br />A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING SPRINGVALE BALLROOM <br />AND CELEBRATING ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY, AND <br />DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, opening in 1923, Springvale Ballroom is one of the oldest operating <br />ballrooms in Ohio. The facility was originally opened by the Biddulph family and remained in <br />the family until 1994 when it was purchased by the City of North Olmsted, saving it from <br />demolition; and <br />WHEREAS, on May 19, 1923, Fred Clara paid $15 for the right to open the dancing <br />pavilion, and held their first dancejust four days later on May 23, 1923; and <br />WHEREAS, five years later in 1928, a five -hole golf course was added to the property by <br />the Butternut Ridge Golf Club, and the dance hall was converted into a club house. Later, <br />changes to Springvale included the renovation of the ballroom, the addition of a golf office, and <br />an upgrade to a full 18 -hole, semi -private course; and <br />WHEREAS, during World War II, servicemen on leave paid a nickel a dance at <br />Springvale. Ballrooms reached a highpoint of popularity during the 1930's and 1940's, serving <br />as places for social gatherings; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1994 the City of North Olmsted bought the facility from the family and <br />saved it from demolition. Since taking ownership, both the course and the ballroom have <br />undergone extensive rejuvenation and are booming with more business each and every day; and <br />WHEREAS, sponsored by the Landmarks Commission, the Olmsted Historical Society, <br />as well as The Ohio Historical Society, the Springvale Ballroom received a Historical Marker in <br />2007; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council is proud to recognize and celebrate the history and 100" <br />Anniversary of Springvale Ballroom, and encourage the residents of North Olmsted to join in the <br />celebration on May 18, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. at the Springvale Ballroom. <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, CUYAHOGA COUNTY, AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: This Council hereby recognizes the rich history and celebrates Springvale <br />Ballroom upon its 100" Anniversary; the Council joins with the Landmarks Commission to <br />recognize and celebrate at the Springvale Ballroom on May 18, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. and welcome <br />all residents to join the festivities (admission fee of $10.00). <br />
