School bus riders are picked up in a designated area distinct from the personal pick-up. For the middle school
dismissal, law enforcement officers are present to help the process. One officer helps regulate the buses and
cars going out from the middle school to Butternut Ridge Rd. Another officer helps student cross Butternut
Ridge Road to the library.
Figure 12. School buses lining up at designated lane
Similar to the high school students, a lot of the middle school students were observed leaving the building using
the rear exit doors to head towards Butternut Ridge Rd. Many of the middle school students also head to the
library to wait to be picked up. Compared to the high school students, when the yellow flashing light is activated
at the midblock crosswalk, the middle school students had the hardest time crossing as they waited for vehicles
to notice them and stop. During the time of observation, when the signal was activated, vehicle stopped only
when a police officer is present. With this, there are a lot of speeding, failure to yield, and jaywalking observed,
especially along Butternut Ridge Rd.
(New) North Olmsted Elementary School
The new elementary school will have Lorain Road and Palm Drive as the access points. Based on the preliminary
plan, the Lorain Road access will serve the personal vehicles and Palm Drive would serve the school bus access.
With this, the Lorain Rd/ Walter Rd intersection becomes a main intersection for students going to and from
school. The Lorain Rd/Walter Rd intersection is currently signalized and will be modified to include the school
entrance.
