3.2 ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS
The architectural style of a building is comprised of a set of elements and characteristics that
make it distinguishable or identifiable. This Design Manual does not require a specific architectural
style, but rather encourages the incorporation of different styles that complement each other and
provide visual interest. Architectural elements should be incorporated in an intentional manner
that provide interest to a building.
(A) Primary and accent building materials
should visually complement each other in
terms of color, texture, and pattern.
(B) Additional architectural elements such
as bay windows, decorative shingles,
varied exterior materials, or other forms
of articulation should be included to add
visual variety to the street facing facade of
a structure.
(1) The use of these architectural
elements should be consistent with
the chosen architectural style of the
building.
(2) The pattern or repetition of any
chosen architectural feature, recess,
projection, or break should be
regular, intentional, and predictable
to appear as a unified whole rather
than a combination of unrelated
parts.
(C) Facades that front primary and secondary
streets should be given equal design
consideration for architectural elements.
(D) Buildings that abut street corners should
include architectural elements that
highlight and emphasize the corner.
This is especially important to apply to
prominent intersections or focal points.
20 DESIGN GUIDELINES I JANUARY 31, 2025 DRAFT
(E) Simulated exterior finishes, such as
artificial stone, should be of high quality
that successfully mimics the natural
material and is appropriate to the
Northeast Ohio climate.
(F) Vertical elements, such as columns and
pilasters, should not obstruct views from
windows and routes from entries.
(G) A roof's form, style, pitch, and material
should be compatible with the chosen
architectural style of the building.
FIGURE 7 1 BUILDING FRONTING PRIMARY
AND SECONDARY STREETS
This building extends architectural design
elements to both the primary and secondary
facades, ensuring both streets have
architectural details.
