CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2025 - 98 <br />BY: Mayor Jones, All of City Council <br />A RESOLUTION BY THE CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RECOGNIZING OCTOBER AS "SUDDEN UNEXPECTED DEATH <br />IN EPILEPSY ("SUDEP") AWARENESS MONTH" IN NORTH <br />OLMSTED, AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, Ohio House Bill 731, 134th General Assembly, designates every October 26 <br />as "Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy Awareness Day". This Bill is also known as <br />"Brenna's Law", in honor of the late Brenna Brossard of North Olmsted, Ohio who passed away <br />from SUDEP on January 30, 2022; and <br />WHEREAS, the city of North Olmsted designates the month of October, 2025 as <br />"SUDEP Awareness Month" in association with the Epilepsy Association of Cleveland, in an <br />effort to bring increased awareness and prevention of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy; and <br />WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control indicate that 1 in 1,000 people with <br />Epilepsy dies from SUDEP each year. SUDEP is the sudden, unexpected death of a person with <br />Epilepsy, who is otherwise healthy and no other cause of death can be found, such as trauma or <br />drowning; and <br />WHEREAS, SUDEP most often occurs during or after a generalized seizure, and usually <br />occurs at nighttime when it is often unwitnessed. When a patient is properly informed about <br />SUDEP, they can take steps to mitigate the risk of it occurring; and <br />WHEREAS, preventative steps include taking anti -epileptic drugs (medications), <br />prioritizing sleep, keeping regular doctor visits, avoid alcohol and recreational drugs, identifying <br />and avoiding seizure triggers, and utilizing seizure detection and alert devices. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH <br />OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA, AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: That the Mayor and this Council hereby take action to prevent SUDEP and <br />declare October, 2025 as SUDEP Awareness Month; and <br />SECTION 2: That this Resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency measure <br />immediately necessary for the preservation of the public health, safety, and welfare, and for the <br />further reason it is necessary that this legislation go into effect immediately in order that the City <br />may immediately announce, publicize and proclaim October as SUDEP Awareness Month, and <br />further, provided it receives the affirmative vote of two-thirds of all members of the Council, it <br />shall take effect and be in force immediately upon its passage and approval by the Mayor. <br />
