CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION NO. 2008 - 77 <br />By: Mayor O'Grady and the Entire City Council <br />A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE GREAT LAKES COMPACT AND <br />DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, the City of North Olmsted is an active part of the Northeastern Ohio community; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, the City of North Olmsted is committed to promoting long term economic <br />development initiatives to ensure the economic vitality of Northeast Ohio; and <br />WHEREAS, Lake Erie is a vital natural resource to Northeast Ohio and the State of Ohio, and <br />Lake Erie provides important long term economic opportunities for the region; and <br />WHEREAS, preservation of Lake Erie is vital for the region; and <br />WHEREAS, Seven Great Lakes State Governors have negotiated the Great Lakes Compact, <br />which would serve to preserve Lake Erie and prevent diversions of waters from the Great Lakes; and <br />WHEREAS, the Ohio General Assembly has been considering legislation in each Chamber to <br />ratify The Great Lakes Compact; and <br />WHEREAS, House Bill 416 would ratify the Great Lakes Compact, and Senate Bill 291 would <br />ratify the Great Lakes Compact only after modifications to the Compact; and <br />WHEREAS, modifying the compact would significantly delay if not prevent final approval of the <br />compact. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NORTH <br />OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA, AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: The City of North Olmsted supports and encourages the General Assembly to <br />pass House Bill 416 to ratify the Great Lakes Compact without modification as soon as possible. <br />SECTION Z: That this Resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency measure immediately <br />necessary for the preservation of the public health, safety and welfare, and further for the reason that it is <br />necessary that this Resolution go into effect immediately due to timeliness; and further provided it <br />receives the affirmative vote of two-thirds of all members of Council, it shall take effect and be in force <br />immediately upon its passage and approval by the Mayor.
