CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION N0. 91-190 <br />BY: THE MAYOR AND ENTIRE CITY COUNCIL <br />A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE STATE OF OHIO BEING SELECTED <br />AS A NUCLEAR WASTE DUMPING SITE FOR SIX MIDWESTERN <br />STATES AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY. <br />WHEREAS, The plan to dispose of "low-level" radioactive <br />waste from eleven nuclear power plants located in six states <br />into a dump in the State of Ohio poses an unacceptable risk <br />to the residents of Ohio and the Great Lakes Ecosystem; and <br />WHEREAS, Less than 5 percent of this "low-level" <br />radioactive waste comes from hospitals, research facilities <br />or universities; and <br />WHEREAS, The radioactive wastes that will be placed <br />into this dump are highly toxic and have a long life and <br />include many wastes from nuclear power plants; and <br />WHEREAS, There is no safe technology for the disposal <br />of "low-level" radioactive waste; and <br />WHEREAS, Ohio taxpayers will take permanent title to <br />and environmental and economic liability for a dump that is <br />guaranteed to leak highly dangerous radioactive material, <br />damage the environment and jeopardize the health and welfare <br />of the citizens on the State of Ohio. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: That it is the desire of this Council to <br />oppose the selection of the State of Ohio as a nuclear waste <br />dumping site for six Midwestern states. <br />SECTION 2: That it is also the desire of this Council <br />to call upon Governor George V. Voinovich to declare an <br />immediate moratorium on any and all phases of the <br />"low-level" radioactive waste dump siting and legislative <br />process in the State of Ohio and to work with Congress and <br />governors of other states to develop a responsible <br />radioactive waste policy. <br />
