CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION N0. 91-94 <br />BY: MR. MCKAY ON BEHALF OF MAYOR BOYLE AND THE ENTIRE COUNCIL <br />A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE LONG TERM <br />CARE CAMPAIGN. <br />WHEREAS, The Long Term Care Campaign is a coalition of <br />nearly 140 organizations dedicated to enacting comprehensive <br />legislation to protect American families against the <br />devastating costs of Long Term Care; and <br />WHEREAS, This campaign emerged in response to an <br />outpouring of concern expressed by American families <br />struggling with the emotional and financial stresses of Long <br />Term Care; and <br />WHEREAS, Recent poll data indicated that more than 60 <br />percent of the American public have some experience with the <br />need for long term care; and <br />WHEREAS, Approximately seven million elderly Americans <br />are disabled and will need some long term care; and <br />WHEREAS, The costs of caring for Alzheimer's Disease <br />patients alone exceed $80 billion each year; and <br />WHEREAS, In 1987, nursing home care for the elderly <br />cost the nation $41.6 billion; and <br />WHEREAS, Almost five in ten elderly living alone will <br />spend down their income and financial assets to the poverty <br />level after only 13 weeks in a nursing home; and <br />WHEREAS, The cost of long term care should be borne <br />through a public insurance program and be available to all <br />who need it; and <br />WHEREAS, A national long term care program should <br />provide a comprehensive range of facility-based and <br />community-based health and social services. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: That it is the desire of this Council to <br />support the Long Term Care Campaign in its effort to educate <br />the public and work with members of Congress to build <br />awareness of the issue. <br />
