Support by the City Council will
show support for this worthy community preservation effort; and
WHEREAS, in summer 2005 the historic portion of the Barton Road church, including
the timber framed structure built in 1847, a stick constructed addition built in 1873, and the top
of the bell tower and windows from 1900, was moved six miles from its original site at the
corner of Lorain and Barton Roads to the Frostville Museum at the corner of Cedar Point and
Lewis Roads. The church was restored over a period of three years using materials as close to
what was available at its original construction date. The restoration included returning the
building to its original simple Greek Revival Style as well as preserving three different time
period improvements; and
WHEREAS, the estimated cost of the total restoration project, about $250,000, included
cash and the in kind donations of individuals and local companies, but did not include the
hundreds of hours of work by community volunteers who did the majority of the labor. These
volunteers included talented amateurs and building professionals as well as local students and
adults from multiple organizations. The renovation of the church exemplified the best outcome
of community partnerships between the Olmsted Historical Society, City of North Olmsted,
North Olmsted Landmarks Commission, Cleveland Metroparks, North Olmsted City Schools and
North Olmsted Kiwanis Club.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA, AND STATE OF OHIO:
SECTION 1: That this Council hereby supports and recommends the nomination of the
Frostville Village Church Renovation to be considered by the Cleveland Restoration Society and
AIA Cleveland for the 2009 Celebration of Preservation Award.
SECTION 2: That the Clerk of Council be, and she hereby is, directed to forward a
certified copy of this Resolution to the Cleveland Restoration Society and AIA Cleveland.
