r "" <br />RESOLUTION NO. 96-187 <br />BY: Council Member Janet Saringer <br />A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE STATE OF OHIO BEING <br />SELECTED AS THE RECEIVER OF HAZARDOUS <br />RADIOACTIVE NUCLEAR WASTE FROM SIX MID- <br />WESTERN STATES AND DECLARING AN EMERGENCY AS <br />AMENDED <br />WHEREAS, on June 9, 1995, Governor George Voinovich signed Senate Bill 19 <br />which designates the State of Ohio as the first low-level radioactive waste storage facility <br />site for six midwestern states; and <br />WHEREAS, the "low-level" radioactive wastes that will be put into this storage <br />facility site are very highly toxic and long-lived radioactive materials, including all wastes <br />from nuclear power plants except the "high-level" radioactive fuel rods; and <br />WHEREAS, there is no safe technology for disposal of "low-level" radioactive <br />waste which has the potential of damaging the environment and jeopardizing the health <br />and welfare of the citizens of the State of Ohio; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council unanimously passed Resolution No. 91-190 on <br />December 18, 1991, which opposed the selection of the State of Ohio as a site for nuclear <br />waste storage for six midwestern states; and <br />WHEREAS, this resolution constitutes an emergency measure providing for the <br />immediate preservation of the public health, safety and welfare. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY <br />OF NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />Section 1: That this Council strongly opposes the State of Ohio being selected as <br />the receiver of hazardous radioactive nuclear waste from six midwestern states. <br />Section 2: That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby directed to transmit <br />copies of this resolution to George V. Voinovich, Governar of the State of Ohio; Richard <br />Finan, President of the Ohio State Senate; and Jo Ann Davidson, Speaker of the Ohio <br />House of Representatives.
