.? <br />? <br />BY: Mrs. PetriRac <br />A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING OPPOSITION TO THE CONSIDERATION <br />OF NORTHEAST OHIO AS STORAGE FACILITIES FOR RADIOACTIVE <br />NUCLEAR WASTES DUE TO EXTREME POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL <br />AND ECOLOGICAL HAZARDS. <br />WHEREAS, it has com <br />Governor James A. Rhodes <br />engaged with the Nuclear <br />consider Northeast Ohio, <br />geological formations in <br />nuclear wastes, and <br />CITY OF NORTH OLMSTED <br />RESOLUTION N0. 78-52 <br />e to the attention of this Council that <br />and members of his administration are <br />Regulatory Commission in studies to <br />Lake Erie, abandoned coal mines, or other <br />Ohio as storage facilities for radioactive <br />WHEREAS, the uncertainty of the exact properties of nuclear <br />wastes and its long-term impact upon the environment and the ecology <br />indicate the gravest possible detrimental effects upon human life, <br />as well as the environment, are possible, and <br />WHEREAS, there is minimal experience with the disposal of nuclear <br />wastes in the United States although experience indicates that atomic <br />waste storage has been banned in the State of Minnesota, prohibited <br />from storage in Louisiana salt domes, placed under legislative control <br />in the State of Vermont and are subject to a one-year moratorium on <br />storage in New Mexico, and <br />tiVHEREAS, such experience indicates that it would be extremely <br />dangerous and foolhardy to store nuclear wastes in the northeast <br />region of Ohio which constitutes the most heavily populated area of <br />the state as well as one of the more highly populated sections of the <br />United States, and <br />WHEREAS, State Senator John T. McCormack has introduced a <br />resolution in the 112th General Assembly of Ohio calling upon Governor <br />Rhodes and members of his administration to immediately cease all <br />consideration of storage facilities for radioactive nuclear wastes <br />in Ohio, and <br />j^IHEREAS, the Mayor and Council of the City of North Olmsted <br />desire to support such Resolution, and, further, desire to achieve <br />the result of prohibiting nuclear waste storage in Ohio. <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />NORTH OLMSTED, COUNTY OF CUYAHOGA AND STATE OF OHIO: <br />SECTION 1: The Mayor and Council of the City of North Olmsted, <br />hereby register their support of Senate Joint Resolution No. 32 <br />introduced by Mr. McCormack in the 112th General Assembly and further <br />call upon Governor James A. Rhodes, the Ohio Department of Energy, <br />the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to cease all studies of Ohio locations <br />for nuclear waste storage and to cease all negotiations which would <br />lead to the establishment of nuclear waste storage facilities in Ohio <br />due to the extreme uncertainty and potential danger to life, the <br />environment and the ecology of Ohio.
