There are Homewood Drive homeowners who have chosen a concrete sidewalk, which has
generated questions concerning uniformity of appearance. The assessment policy determined
jointly by the Administration and City Council requires that each prope~_ owner retaim the ri~t
to choose either sandstone or concrete according to their own private w~ahes~ Please be
reassured the City will not assist in imposing that choice on anyone. As described many times,
each homeowner will be assessed only for the sidewalk work in front of their own properties.
Any other financial arrangements made between individuals on the street are, of course, a private
matter between those individuals;

YOUR ASSESSMENT AND OPTIONS

Our.recOrds indicate that you have chosen to "opt out" of the sidewalk' project. No work will be
done on your sidewalk this spring. See below for additional information on this choice.
Your'assessed portion of the decorative street lamp installation is estimated to be {larnt~cost].
Therefore, your total assessment is estimated to be '{assessment).

several'options are available to you at this point:

1. Retain the selection presently in our records. Your assessment estimate would remain as
indicated.

2. Change your selection. You must send us a signed, written letter by January 21, 2002
indicating this. Your legal Notice of Assessment will then reflect your new.commitment.

You can "opt out" of the sidewalk project. You will not receive a new sidewalk as part of
this project. You will, however, still be assessed for your share of the decorative street
lamp item. The City's Sidewalk Repair program will then come into effect. The
Sidewalk Inspector will provide you with a sidewalk citation during the 2003
construction season. Upon receipt, you will have 30 days to make all noted repairs. You
can choose either concrete or sandstone as .a material, but you, or your contractor, must
follow City construction standards. You also have the option of allowing the City to
make the required repairs through our contractor. Many people take advantage of this as
the prices are generally very competitive. At this time, the City uses only concrete with
this program. Importantly, 100% of all costs are paid by the homeowner, without any
credits. Again, we will need written notification by January 21, 2002 if you choose this
option.

The contractor will be paid according to .the number of square feet of sidewalk, installed and
according to the type of work performed. Careful measurements will be made of the quantities
of re-laid and new sandstone - or new concrete -at each property. The final assessment charge
will be calculated from the exact amount of work performed on your sidewalk.

3
