<br />Lakewood Hospital Partners in Childhood Obesity Study. Lakewood Hospital continues to collaborate
<br />with the Lakewood City Schools to take action against the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. Hospital
<br />health professionals have screened hundreds of stodents in the city's eight public elementary schools, with
<br />results indicating a strong relationship among the variables of poverty, body mass index scores and aca-
<br />demic achievement. Programs are being developed to combat this critical health concem.
<br />
<br />Adopting Best Practices. In recent months, Lakewood Hospital has played a key leadership role in the
<br />adoption of best practices for our regional hospitals. Recent changes have been the development of a new
<br />patient transfer center for our Emergency Departments to improve access for our patients and physicians.
<br />We have also established sustainability goals to be more environmentally friendly and started offering edu-
<br />cational sessions for professional development.

<br />People Honors and Appointments
<br />
<br />Regional unification. Mary Walborn, MD, was named vice president of Regional Quality for the west
<br />market hospitals as part of a reorganization of the quality function across the region. She maintains her
<br />role as vice president of Medical Operations at Lakewood Hospital. Jim Rowe was named vice president,
<br />Clinical Services for the regional hospitals. He is leading the integration of lab and other clinical services
<br />as well as best practice adoptions across the region. Previously, Mr. Rowe was vice president, Operations
<br />at Lakewood Hospital.

<br />Honoring Women of Distinction. In September, several accomplished women were honored for their contri-
<br />butions to the community at the annual Simply Women, Simply Wonderful event. Honorees include Maureen
<br />Arbeznik, principal, Lakewood Catholic Academy; Mary Anne Crampton, executive director, Lakewood
<br />Community Progress Inc. and Lakewood Hospital Foundation Board member; and Mary Holland, vice
<br />president of investroents, UBS Financial Services and Lakewood Catholic Academy Board member.

<br />Community Service Awards. This fall, we recognized several individuals whose dedication, generosity and
<br />commitroent have led to extraordinary contributions in the community. Lakewood recipients were David
<br />Dombrowiak, president and CEO of the Community West Foundation; former Lakewood Mayor Thomas
<br />George; and Brian King, president of the Board of Tmstees for the Lakewood Hospital Foundation and
<br />chair of the Board of Tmstees for North Coast Health Ministry.

<br />Leading in Diabetes Care. The American Diabetes Association recently presented Lakewood Hospital
<br />Diabetes Program Development Coordinator Gina Gavlak, RN, BSN, with the Association's prestigious
<br />Outstanding Advocacy Award.
<br />
<br />Medical Staff Recruitment. Significant progress continnes to be made in physician recruitroent. In January,
<br />David Wendt, MD, family practice, will join David Brill, DO, and Cory Fisher, DO, at the new Lakewood
<br />Medical Associates, Beachcliff.
<br />
<br />New Medical Staff President. The medical staff at Lakewood Hospital has elected neurologist Arthur
<br />Dick, MD, who has cared for patients at Lakewood Hospital for 20 years, as the new president of the
<br />medical staff. He will serve a three-year term and succeeds William Riebel, MD, who has served with
<br />distinction since January 2005.
<br />
<br />Lakewood physician of the Year. Lakewood Hospital Medical Staff unanimously named Cipriano S.
<br />Beredo, MD, the inaugnral Physician of the Year for his high regard for clinical standards and his outstand-
<br />ing service to patients.
<br />
<br />Journalism Hall of Fame. Lute Harmon, Sr., Lakewood Hospital Foundation Trustee, was inducted into
<br />the Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame in recognition of his noteworthy accomplishments in the publica-
<br />tion arena, including the founding of Cleveland Magazine.
<br />
<br />Nursing Hall of Fame Inductees. The Cleveland Clinic health system established the Nursing Hall of
<br />Fame in 2002 to celebrate the organization's nurses who demonstrate special skills, dedication and compas-
<br />sion in delivering bedside patient care. The 2007 Lakewood Hospital inductees were Mary Kirsch, RN, and
<br />Tracey Renner, LPN.
