WHEREAS, <br />Foreign investors already have used NAFTA's ISDS provisions to challenge decisions regarding local <br />building permits, environmental regulations, state bans on toxic chemicals and decisions of state courts; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, <br />Promoting economic growth in Lakewood requires an approach that reforms the entire trade negotiation <br />process to ensure that voices of workers, small businesses, families and communities are heard and their <br />interests addressed; and <br />WHEREAS, <br />The TPP has been negotiated in secret, effectively shutting state and local governments out of the <br />process, limiting our ability to influence its rules to ensure the people of Lakewood can participate in the <br />benefits of trade; and <br />WHEREAS, <br />Repeating old mistakes in negotiating new trade agreements such as the TPP represents a missed <br />opportunity to strengthen our economy and promote sustainable growth; and <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKE, WOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br />That the City of Lakewood calls upon our elected officials in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of <br />Representatives to oppose the TPP and any similar trade deals if they fail to restructure the misguided and <br />failed policies of the past. <br />Section 1. That the Clerk of Council is hereby authorized and directed to forward a certified <br />copy of this Resolution to Clerk of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and that a <br />copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of the meeting. <br />Section 2. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this council concerning and <br />relating to the passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, and <br />that all such deliberations of this Council and of any of its committees that resulted in such <br />formal action were in meetings open to the public in compliance with all legal requirements. <br />Adopted: (i� t�t 20 1-6 <br />Approved: <br />MAYOR <br />
