Provide a narrative description of your idea in 250 words or less. Attach a separate sheet if necessary:
Since 2015 Council and the administration have expressed support for prioritizing public art. The work of the
Public Art Task Force and the completion of the street mural on Rosewood Ave. are examples of positive steps
forward. The next step is to develop a comprehensive plan that sets a path for public art and identifies the issues
and goals that we want our future public art to address. Research has shown that the most successful public arts
programs are those that operate under a comprehensive plan. It is expected that a public arts plan, among other
features, will:
• Formally establish a public art program • Set forth the mission, goals, and objectives
• Create at least one reliable funding source • Provide a mechanism for community input
At the same time that we develop the public art plan, we should aim to complete at least two additional public
art projects as opportunities become available. Doing so will help the City continue to learn as we go and to
communicate to the public our continued focus on public art.
2. Briefly explain how this will benefit the community:
According to Americans for the Arts, the benefits of public art can generally be grouped into four categories:
• Engage civic dialogue and community • Connect artists with communities
Attract attention and economic benefit
12
• Enhance public appreciation of art
