2017 Budget Priority Submission Form
Finance Committee
Preferred due date: Thursday August 31st
Final Due date: Tuesday September 5th
Title of Project or Policy Priority: Expansion of traffic calming to additional Lakewood streets
Submitted by: Tom Bullock
City Departments to be involved: Planning, Public Works, Public Safety
Potential community partners: Block Clubs
Which of the Community Vision focus areas does your priority address? Check all that
apply:
❑ Commercial Development © Safety
❑Housing ❑x Mobility
NCommunity Wellness ❑Education & Culture
Which of the following City goals does your priority address? Check all that apply:
❑x Safe & Secure N Vibrant Neighborhoods
❑Economic Development
❑ Other
® Sound Governance
1. Provide a narrative description of your idea in 250 words or less. Attach a separate sheet
if necessary:
This proposal calls, in the broadest terms, for the Administration to use 2018 to identify, begin
planning for, and possibly implement, additional streets in Lakewood upon which traffic calming
measures may be deployed. Ideally, two to three areas could be addressed with two to three new
traffic calming techniques to expand the City's experience with and data set on traffic calming.
2. Briefly explain how this will benefit the community:
Chronic speeding in neighborhoods ranks among the top complaints reported by Lakewood
residents. Lakewood is a walkable community investing heavily in repairing sidewalks to keep
our neighborhoods walkable, and Lakewood is working hard to keep itself hospitable to young
families, retirees, and people with mobility challenges alike. Chronic motor vehicle speeding
affects all of these groups.
3. Estimated expense (provide a range):
No dollar expenditure, but rather staff time to identify problem areas, conduct community
conversations, gather traffic counts, and to begin to devise solutions specific to one or more
areas.
4. If applicable, summarize any proposals or discussions from the past that are related to
this priority.
Woodward Avenue chicanes.
P, VA
