MINUTES OF THE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE <br /> May 24, 2021 <br /> Remote Meeting <br /> Present: Councilmembers Neff, Bullock& Litten <br /> Also Present: Mayor George, Chief Kaucheck, Chief Dunphy, Planning Director Leininger, <br /> Assistant Law Director Swallow <br /> Call to Order: 6:00 p.m. <br /> Approval of the minutes of the May 3, 2021 Public Safety Committee. <br /> A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the May 3, 2021 Public Safety <br /> Committee. A roll call vote was taken as follows: <br /> Yeas: Neff, Bullock, Litten <br /> Nays: none <br /> Motion adopted. Minutes approved. <br /> Update from Lakewood Police Department regarding investigations and park safety <br /> Chief Kaucheck reported that all major gun-related incidents have been resolved via arrest with <br /> the exception of one suspect in the Madison Park shooting. He reported that foot patrols are <br /> going well and occurring daily. Mayor George added that half of the high-tech cameras are now <br /> installed and the City is working on the logistics of the others. <br /> Councilmember Bullock asked to work with the Chief on an outstanding records request related <br /> to video footage of the Madison Park shooting. <br /> Mayor George provided an update on the staffing of park guards and court proctors. There has <br /> been an ongoing enhanced presence at Madison Park and the City is looking to increase presence <br /> at other parks as well. <br /> In response to a question from Councilmember Litten, Chief Kaucheck explained that he is <br /> incentivized to retire within the next two and a half years. He provided assurances that the <br /> Department is preparing for this and who will step up will depends on when he is ready to make <br /> an announcement. <br /> Chief Kaucheck provided an update on the department's vacancies. He reported that there are <br /> three officers currently in the academy and four are in training. Since he last reported to the <br /> committee, 2-3 new officers are now on their own. Additionally, one officer will return from <br /> light duty on May 31. <br />
