Discussion: Councilmembers and Board members asked qualifying questions. Councilmember <br /> Baker advocated for the use of raised crosswalks that act as speed bumps and bringing <br /> crosswalks closer to the road. <br /> In response to a question, Director Leininger explained that a prequalified consultant will be <br /> assigned come in and analyze data, physical landscape, and to help the city arrive at its plan. He <br /> further explained that feedback from Council and the Board will be incorporated, and that the <br /> application is merely the first step. He mentioned that data and input from parents, teachers, <br /> students, and the public will be solicited. <br /> Superintendent Niedzwiecki remarked that the Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Palumbo is <br /> currently part of a committee to get the grant up and running. She expressed appreciation for the <br /> partnership and the opportunity to take a deeper look into the issue. <br /> President Shaughnessy inquired about whether the City and Schools have a process for handling <br /> immediate concerns and complaints about pedestrian safety. President O'Malley encouraged the <br /> Schools to contact Police Chief Kaucheck and the Mayor about immediate concerns. <br /> Mr. Callahan added that the schools and the city effectively partnered this school year to add an <br /> additional crossing guard at Emerson School in response to parent concerns. <br /> Snow removal <br /> President O'Malley remarked that the City's Public Works Department was extremely busy <br /> following up after our recent major storms. He introduced Mayor George to discuss her new <br /> proposal to update and streamline the city's process for keeping streets clear. <br /> Mayor George explained that she has an internal team diving into the snow-removal process and <br /> examining the Code. She intends to produce a procedures manual that can be a reference for <br /> employees and the public, to amend the Code to clarify when it is a true snow emergency, and to <br /> assign one city hall point person for all snow removal operations. She expressed enthusiasm for <br /> partnering with Council on this topic, noting that Councilmembers Shachner and Kepple have <br /> also introduced a communication on the topic. <br /> Discussion: <br /> Ms. Katzenberger asked that the city be aware of the drop off and pick up requirements and <br /> protocols as part of its look into snow removal. She mentioned recent challenges at some schools <br /> caused by snow. <br /> President O'Malley reported that the Public Works Department was very responsive during the <br /> storms when issues were brought to their attention. He encouraged Board members to reach out <br /> to the city if they become aware of immediate concerns. <br /> Councilmember Shachner remarked that he intends to start a discussion in the Public Safety <br /> Committee regarding snow on sidewalks and how to better facilitate communication between <br /> police and the Building Department for follow up on private properties. <br /> 2 <br />
