He referred <br /> members to the NLC member resources available online and spoke about the conference's <br /> speakers, including President Biden. He also spoke about the worthwhile investment in <br /> networking with other local leaders and comparing how different communities operate. <br /> Councilmember Shachner characterized the conference as a worthwhile experience that allowed <br /> him to attend workshops and network with colleagues. Specifically, he came away with new <br /> ideas on how ARPA and infrastructure funds can be used to promote affordable housing and <br /> expansion of broadband access. <br /> Motion by President O'Malley, seconded by Vice President Litten to receive and file the oral <br /> report. RESOLUTION 2022-08 - A RESOLUTION to oppose and condemn in the strongest <br /> possible manner Ohio House Bills 322 and 327, which seek to censor discussion and <br /> discourage critical thinking on topics regarding race, sex, and American history in <br /> Ohio's K-12 schools, institutions of higher education, and local governments. (pg. 31) <br /> Councilmember Kepple made introductory remarks and described the potential negative impact <br /> of the proposed state legislation. <br /> President O'Malley remarked that teachers' unions have reached out to him in support of <br /> Resolution 2022-08 and NEOEA, which represents the Lakewood teachers, asked him to <br /> convey their endorsement of the legislation. He referred people to honestforohioeducation.info <br /> —a website dedicated to dispelling the myths around these state bills. He attributed Ohio's <br /> shrinking population to policies like these. <br /> Councilmember Rader characterized the bills as a strategy to de-fund schools and expressed <br /> hope that the bills will die in the General Assembly. <br /> Councilmember Shachner spoke passionately against the Ohio State House bills, explaining that <br /> they essentially delete people and their history from conversations and curriculum.
