(to be provided)
Councilmember Baker presented the following communication:
We had a Public Safety Committee meeting here today at 6:30. The first order of business was to
approve the minutes, but then we also had some folks from the Be SMART campaign, which is a
program for the Everytown for Gun Safety support fund, to talk about safe gun storage.
Tragically, and one thing that is not lost on me and still shocks me every time I say it, guns are the
leading cause of death among children in our country. What this program seeks to do is make
conversations more acceptable and less taboo to talk about guns in homes and safe gun storage.
We had Stacie Ross and Patricia Barley give a presentation, and Marianne Crampton also gave
other information associated with the program. They are looking to get in front ofany group they
can over the next year to talk about this important conversation and particularly want to have a
push as we near summertime to maybe work with the Administration to have a kind of campaign
to raise awareness about the issue. I know that the Mayor has been a big supporter of this and the
Police Department has issued gun locks. The Be SMART stands for secure all guns in your home
2
