Councilmembers Litten and Baker mentioned the most likely time for the meeting to be scheduled
will be September. President Litten noted an advantage to this timeline is that an entire season’s
worth of information and experiences can be taken into consideration.
Councilmember Rader mentioned that the pool Wi-Fi was down recently, which caused problems
for accepting electronic payment. He asked that this topic be addressed at the upcoming meeting.
Councilmember Bullock advocated for meeting as soon as possible to help address issues during
the current season. He pointed out that the pools are another example of the challenge of jointly
managing recreation issues with the schools.
Councilmember Shachner asked the Law Department for clarification on Council’s authority to
set rules, regulations, and schedules at the pool, or if these matters are entirely in the jurisdiction
of the schools.
Councilmember Marx remarked that she has heard from many residents regarding concerns at
Foster Pool. She suggested that admission to Beck’s pool be discounted to draw more residents
there.
Councilmember Baker added that the objective of the conversation is to improve the pool
experience for residents and to retain families in Lakewood – a matter on which the City and
schools are aligned.
On the motion: All members in favor. Motion passed. Communication referred to Public Works
& Sustainability Committee.
****
6.Communication from Councilmember Baker regarding traffic guards. (pg. 6)
otion by President Litten, seconded by Vice President Kepple to refer the communication to the
M
Public Safety Committee.
Discussion: Mayor George noted that the Administration is in the midst of its Active
Transportation Plan and Safe Routes to School planning. She recommended that a meeting on this
proposal take place after those plans are drafted.
Director Leininger reported that the Active Transportation Plan is expected to be complete in
September or October.
In response to a question by President Litten, Councilmember Baker stated that he was not
particularly attached to the number of traffic guards in the proposed ordinance but used the number
as a jumping off point for further discussion. He noted that no other position within the city has a
set maximum number of employees in the code.
4
