Councilmember Bullock commented that the limit on traffic guards appears arbitrary and that the
number of guards should instead be driven by needs and traffic patterns.
Councilmember Baker remarked that Council could meet and potentially remove this limit in
anticipation of the release of the Active Transportation Plan. He also noted that school will start
soon and removing the limit on guards before that time could be helpful.
Councilmember Kepple contemplated the potential advantages of removing the cap on traffic
guards in anticipation the Active Transportation Plan.
Public Comment:
Emily Lindberg – 1651 Lauderdale Ave.
Ms. Lindberg spoke in support of the proposed ordinance. She spoke of her family’s challenges
regarding safety getting to and from school on bike. Her family lives on the edge of the Horace
Mann district, with two other elementary schools that are physically closer. She recommended
specific crosswalks for guards. She observed that the majority of families at Horace Mann are
driving to school and that the lack of safe crossings contributes to this.
Councilmember Shachner thanked Ms. Lindberg for providing this helpful context to the
discussion.
On the motion: All members voted in favor.
