Chief Fischer noted that the speed citations for 2023 surpassed the total number of citations in <br />any year since before 2018. He reiterated that speed is a priority for LPD and that school zones <br />will be patrolled daily. He added that using officers to control speed can be more valuable than <br />speed cameras because officers are able to address additional issues such as driving without a <br />license or insurance. <br />Councilmember Baker expressed appreciation to Chief Fischer for his work to deter speeding. <br />He asked the Planning Department to collect data on speed in school zones during school hours <br />throughout the fall during the school year. The Planning Department agreed to gather such data. <br />Councilman Baker asked for the committee to reconvene in the fall to review speed data to see if <br />police enforcement is helping to change behavior. <br />Councilmember Bullock expressed support for the Chief’s renewed approach to speed patrols <br />and also suggested that more streets that are evaluated for traffic calming receive an intervention <br />such as speed bumps. <br />th. <br />Councilmember Baker reminded everyone to vote Aug 8 <br />Public Safety Committee adjourned at 6:49 p.m. <br /> <br />3 <br /> <br />
