It was mentioned that inequities sometimes show up not in the <br />ways in which policies are written, but int eh way they are implemented. <br />In response to a question, leaders from the Equius Group referenced their work in other <br />communities including Solon and Shaker Heights and briefly discussed those projects. <br />In response to a question, Ms. Merritt discussed the differences between a diversity, equity and <br />inclusion plan and a racial equity plan. She explained that diversity is a broader concept that can <br />encompass race, gender, sexuality, socioeconomics, and other factors. The purpose of the racial <br />equity plan is to interrupt racism and to evaluate what structures must be put in place to do so. <br /> <br />Ms. Merritt stated that Equius would research communities that have succeeded with racial <br />equity. She mentioned that Shaker Heights and Seattle are recognized nationally. She also <br />acknowledged that the work of racial equity is never fully complete. <br /> <br />Ms. Love mentioned the Government Alliance on Racial Equity as a resource. She mentioned <br />that LakewoodÓs racial equity plan will depend upon the cityÓs goals and the gaps it is trying to <br />close. <br /> <br />Councilmember Kepple asked how the racial equity plan will potentially influence external <br />stakeholders in the city. <br /> <br />Ms. Love responded that the plan will come about via an organic process that will be influenced <br />by other community organizations. The plan will seek alignment among different community <br />organizations and plans. She emphasized that the work is primarily externally facing and how its <br />focus will be more on how these policies and practices impact residents and visitors and less <br />about internal city hall policies. <br /> <br />Councilmember Baker recommended reaching out to the cityÓs refugee population and the Asian <br />Pacific Islander population. <br /> <br />Public Comment: <br />Kate McBride, Laura Rodriguez Carbone and Angelina Steiner of the Anti-Racism Task Force <br />expressed support for Equius Group and the effort to develop this plan. <br /> <br />Ms. Rodriguez-Carbone encouraged the city to rely on members of the Anti-Racism Task Force <br />to bridge the gap with communities of color. <br /> <br />Angelina Steiner encouraged Equius and the city to participate at the Madison Park Community <br />Coalition block party to understand the diversity of Lakewood. <br /> <br /> <br />Director Berry and the committee confirmed that the final draft of the plan will be discussed in a <br />public meeting by Council before it becomes formally adopted as the cityÓs plan. <br /> <br />Health & Human Services Committee adjourned at approximately 7:00 p.m. <br />Ћ <br /> <br />
