(to
be provided)
Chairman Baker delivered the following report:
The Public Safety Committee met earlier this evening. Captain Eschweiler was here on
behalf of the police department, as well as Animal Control Officer Crawford. The topic of
the meeting was to discuss a resolution to increase the adoption fees for cats, kittens, and
dogs. It was a good discussion; the resolution was also referred to LASWAB
(The Lakewood Animal Safety and Welfare Advisory Board). They are still formulating their
response to the resolution. They meet again this week, but we do have a representative from
LASWAB here today, Chair MacDonald. She had some questions about segregation of
funds, and some particulars of the adoption fees. We had a good discussion on the floor,
and ultimately amended the resolution to allow for the adoption fees to be codified as “no
more than,” to allow for the animal control officer to have more flexibility in providing
discounts for folks who buy more than one animal. We favorably referred the amended
resolution out of committee but are asking that the resolution be deferred in tonight’s
general meeting as we await the final comments of LASWAB.
Discussion: Vice President Kepple mentioned that fees from the Animal Shelter go into
Lakewood’s general fund. However, she stated that Council usually has some context about the
costs to provide such services. She requested additional information on the total cost to operate
the Lakewood Animal Shelter.
Motion by President Litten, seconded by Vice President Kepple, to receive and file the oral
report. All in favor. Motion passed.
4.RESOLUTION 2023-43 – A RESOLUTION to take effect immediately provided it
receives the affirmative vote of atleast five members of Council, or otherwise to take
effect and be in force after the earliest period allowed by law, to increase the adoption
fees for animals that are adopted through the Lakewood Animal Shelter.
