AD[NG [ REFERRED TO HOUSING <br />COMMITTEE ON 4/21/97; PLACED ON 2nd READING <br /> <br />ORDINANCE NO. 24-97 BY: BoscJ. a, CorrJ. gan, Flannery, <br /> George, Roth, Seelie, Smith <br /> <br /> AN ORDINANCE amending Chapter 1331 of the Building Code of the Codified <br />Ordinances of the City of Lakewood to require the installation of carbon monoxide (CO) <br />detectors in specific rental dwelling umts. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the presence of undetected carbon monoxide gas in a home can cause <br />death or serious injury to its inhabitants, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City has a large segment of aging rental housing units most likely <br />not protected by carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the installation of carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in specific <br /> occupied rental dwelling units and rooming units would substantially reduce the possibility <br /> of such gas related deaths within the City, and it is in the best interest of the City to <br />· require such devices in specific rental units; now, therefore, <br /> <br /> BE'IT'ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, <br />STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That the title of Chapter 1331 of the Building Code of the Codified <br />Ordinances of the City of Lakewood, now reading as follows: <br /> <br /> Chapter 133 I <br />Smoke Detectors in Rental Dwelling Units <br /> <br />shall be and the Same is hereby amended: <br /> <br /> Chapter 1331 <br />Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors in Rental Dwelling Units <br /> <br /> Section 2. That Section 1331.01 of the Building Code of the Codified Ordinance <br />of the City of Lakewood, now reading as follows: <br /> <br />1331.01 REQUIREMEI~. <br /> It shall be the responsibility of the owner of each new and ~xisting occupied rental <br />dwelling unit to install smoke detectors in each such residential dwelling unit as hereinafter <br />provided. <br /> The smoke detectors shall be capable of sensing visible and invisible particles of <br />combustion and providing a suitable audible alarm thereoP, fiartber, they. shall be installed <br />by September I, 1952, in the manner hereinafter provided (unless any other provision of <br />County, State or Federal Law shall require installation before that dare).
